He has plunged into the "precious copy of your verses", lent to a mutual friend: "My curiosity was all the more lively as I had come out of the reading of Hecate very exalted; but... I am looking in vain for some more correct expression to describe my dismay at your verses: they pass me by. I only feel a sort of amazement when I read them, full of consideration, feeling that the deficient one here is me. But I esteem you much too much to risk compliments about them that would not be perfectly sincere"...
