The Public Decorations and their Sketches. A Critical Catalogue, Vol Y, Text, Oxford, 1989, cited as n°584 and 587 (works by a pupil). Our two paintings are repeats of the final painting of the Hôtel de ville. Eugène Delacroix was commissioned to decorate the Salon de la Paix in the Hôtel de Ville in 1851. He worked on it between 1852 and 1854. Episodes from the life of Hercules were placed on the arched tympanums between the doors, the windows and the fireplace. The ceiling represented Peace coming to console men by bringing them Abundance. The decoration disappeared in the fire of the building in 1871 and is only known through sketches and drawings that Delacroix had kept in his studio. Under the numbers 1129 and 1141, Alfred Robaut confuses Andrieu's sketches after Delacroix (one of which is in the Carnavalet museum and the other) with our paintings.
