THE HOLY FAMILY R…
Description

ANTOON WILLEMSENS (ACTIVE IN ANTWERP 1649/50 AND 1672/73) THE HOLY FAMILY RESTING DURING THE FLIGHT TO EGYPT Copper parqueted Monogrammed in lower right: A.W. IN. F. The holy family resting during the flight to Egypt, cradled copper, monogrammed in the lower right: A.W. IN. F. 60,5 x 79,5 cm - 23,8 x 31,3 in. Our painting is related to a group of paintings on copper, similarly monogrammed "A.W. IN.F.". They are attributed to Abraham Willemsens, especially the Rest of the Holy Family during the Flight into Egypt in the Prado Museum, Madrid (copper, 58 x 77 cm). But the style of this group of paintings, close to that of Pieter van Avont, seems to be very different from that of Abraham Willemsens. We propose to follow the attribution to Antoon Willemsens proposed by Gregory Martin, in the February 1993 issue of Apollo ("Abraham Willemsens (again)", in Apollo, February 1993, pp. 100 and 101, note 13). Antoon Willemsens became a member of the Antwerp guild in 1649/50, he was still active in 1672/1673. No work signed with his full name has appeared.
