Charles Lapicque (French, 1898-1988) San Zaccaria, 1956 Canvas signed and dated 56. Height 130.5, width 81 cm. Provenance: Alain and Violette Merle collection. Bibliography: - Philippe Bouchet, "Charles Lapicque, Le Dérangeur", editions Thalia, 2009, a canvas close to p. 37 (163x97 dated 1956). - Bernard Balanci, "Charles Lapicque, Catalogue raisonné de l'œuvre peint et de la sculpture", Mayer editions, 1973, close works illustrated n°324 and n°325. The church of San Zaccaria, dear to Lapicque, houses in its choir the baroque fresco by Girolamo Pellegrini (1624-1700) representing Saint Zachariah in glory. Lapicque made many visits to the Serenissima, after receiving a prize at the Venice Biennale in 1953. Inspired by this Benedictine monastery, Lapicque translates in this painting the memory of movement and a desire to show inaccessible points of view. Dark night and glowing torches, exterior and interior, appear simultaneously in a synthetic vision.
