Description

Charles Lapicque (French, 1898-1988) Le 11 novembre, 1938 Height 100, Width 73 cm. Provenance: Alain and Violette Merle collection. Bibliography: Philippe Bouchet, "Lapicque", editions Cercle d'Art, 2009, reproduced under n°17. This historical canvas is among the first masterpieces of the artist. A singular and two-coloured representation, it goes against the grain of some of his future production. However, the pre-Columbian inspiration of the figure can already be seen, closer to a Teotihuacan mask than a broken mouth. The complementary colours are opposed and reduced to the status quo by the outline... like two armies stopped by an armistice.
