Description

École ITALIENNE du début du XVIIIe siècle, atelier de Francesco SOLIMENA

Allegory of the Reign Marouflaged paper on canvas 27.5 x 42 cm Note: - Our painting is one of the replicas made in Solimena's workshop from the Allegory for Charles of Augsburg (copper, 42 x 59 cm; see N. Spinosa, Francesco Solimena, Rome, 2018, no. 160, reproduced). - Minerva seated on a lion points to the Castel Nuovo in Naples. To her right a winged young woman evoking History writing in a book resting on Time. In the centre, a medallion on which a royal figure was to appear. This allegorical composition was used several times by Solimena's workshop with the main variation being the figure painted on the medallion. Our painting, as well as the one in the National Gallery in London, presents a medallion in grisaille.
