Saint in Bliss Canvas 80 x 63.5 cm (Accidents and restorations) Note: A Piedmontese painter, Guala trained in his father's studio where he quickly acquired stylistic and chromatic freedom. This type of portrait marked by strong luminous contrasts is typical of the artist's production. Its freedom of tone and pictorial ease are reminiscent of Fragonard's fantasy fi gures. Another version of our painting was in 1976 in a collection in Vigevano, Italy (see S. and S. Martinotti, Pietro Francesco Guala, Turin, 1976, volume II, n°66, reproduced).
