A pupil of Carlo Maratta and later of Francesco Trevisani, Girolamo Pesci is known for his religious paintings.
The attention paid to the hands of the Virgin in the present painting is typical of the painter, as can also be seen in the Mary Magdalene which was sold anonymously, Vienna (Dorotheum), April 7, 2006, no. 64, reproduced.
