Attribué à Claudio Francesco BEAUMONT (1694 - 1766)

Diane protégeant Aréthuse du fl euve Alphée Rectangular canvas with oval painted surface 53,5 x 78 cm Provenance: - Anonymous sale, Versailles, Chevau Légers, 25 June 1967, (Me Martin), n°67, reproduced (attributed to Natoire); - Acquired in 1972 from Hudier in Rennes. Note : Painter from Turin of Montpellier family, Claudio Francesco Beaumont was appointed court painter in Turin in 1731 and took part in the realization of the mythological frescoes of the Royal palace of the city. The subject of our painting is taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses (Book IV, 494) : the fluffy God Alpheus, infatuated with the nymph Arethusa, is pursuing her. She implores the goddess Diana who tries to hide her with a thick cloud and ends up transforming her into a spring to save her.
