A renowned artist from Toulouse, Jean-Baptiste Despax was one of the students and collaborators of Antoine Rivalz. He continued his apprenticeship in Paris from 1742 to 1746 with Jean Restout, becoming friends with Carle Van Loo and Charles Natoire. Back in Toulouse in 1746, Despax devoted himself mainly to large-scale religious painting.
