Giovanni Andrea de FERRARI (Gênes 1598 - 1669)

The Adoration of the Shepherds Canvas 115 x 95 cm Provenance: - Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 18 December 1987, n°286, reproduced (attributed to Fiasella); Chez Gombert, Paris; - Anonymous sale, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, 27 June 1991 (Me Ader, Picard, Tajan) n°25, reproduced (Orazio di Ferrari); - Acquired in December 1991 by the present owner. Note : Genoese painter, Giovanni Andrea Ferrari uses the chiaroscuro technique in part of his work, which thus bears witness to the influence of Caravaggio. In our painting, the faces of the shepherds and the Virgin are struck by the divine light that seems to emanate from the Child, creating a play of light and shadow. The same supernatural light strikes the body of Christ carried by two angels in the painting sold anonymously, Amsterdam (Christie's), November 9, 1998, reproduced, n°69.
