FERBER, Capitaine Ferdinand (1862-1909): in the spring of 1898, he came across an issue of the Illustrierte Zeitung reporting on the flights of Otto Lilienthal. This Captain of Artillery and professor of ballistics built his first aircraft in 1899, which he tested unsuccessfully at Fontainebleau. In 1902, he built his Chanute-type No. 5, with a rudder recommended by Wilbur Wright, with which he covered 50 meters at Breuil, near Nice. In 1905, he built his n°6, fitted with a 12 hp Peugeot engine, with which he managed a flight of some forty meters, but the engine ran out of power and the aeroplane landed on the ground. Ferber's importance lies in the fact that he shared his results with others, thus inspiring vocations such as those of the Voisin brothers. - Ferber's handwritten calculations circa 1895, 16pp, annotated by his son Robert Ferber in 1956. - Invoice from Maison Beaugrand in Paris, manufacturer of tarpaulins, tarpaulins & tents, dated March 10, 1900, to Captain Ferber for the supply and delivery of two aeroplanes, one small and one large, at the agreed price of 1,500Frs. - 3 period photographs of Ferber's flight to Nice in 1902. - 2 vintage photographs of Ferber on a Voisin biplane at the Grande Semaine d'Aviation de Reims in August 1909.
