JAPAN - Early EDO period (1603-1868) White and red lacquered wood carved elephant, the front decorated with a lotus petal, the back covered with a red Buddhist flower with a circular space probably intended to receive a Buddha stand (disappeared) 17th century H. 39 cm - L. 64 cm Damage and missing parts, important crack on the bottom Our elephant is part of a long tradition of representation of this animal in Japanese Buddhism, see notably: - Taishakuten riding an elephant, 9th century - To-ji Temple, Kyoto - Lacquered wood elephant, 13th century - Los Angeles Country Museum of Art M.2008.106a-b
