Description

Importante coppia di specchiere barocche in legno scolpito, ebanizzato e dorato a mecca. Roma inizi XVII secolo

Double-row ebonized frame with gilded profiles, cymatium centered by a cherub among richly carved volutes and leafy elements, friezes sculpted with winged female figures..., In 1600, in Rome, decorations progressively abandoned the aspect of severe monumentality that had characterised the decorative arts of the previous century in favour of the much more articulated ornamental solutions proposed by the new Baroque style: during those years, in fact, buildings began to be designed and built whose structures and decorations were conceived according to a new scenographic taste, tending to erase the boundary between real and illusory space. Frames and mirrors took on great importance; in the Renaissance the frame had a function of outlining the painting, while in the Baroque period they had an intrinsic importance as a scenographic whole. The fineness of the carving of the figures went hand in hand with that of the ornamentation (garlands, floral and leafy elements), W. 160 - H. 185 cm, Sotheby's, From a Residence in Piazza Farnese, Rome 18 May 2004
