Yes, it's really him: the 1972 Olympic vice-champion has just won the 110m hurdles final by just three hundredths of an inch over Cuban Alejandro Casanas, a few centimetres given to him by a determined break on the line. The 25-year-old Frenchman became the first European to win Olympic gold in a discipline that has been the preserve of the United States since 1896 (15 victories in 18 editions). Drut was not finished with obstacle racing, as he went on to become a politician: a member of parliament, a mayor, a minister, and a member of the IOC.
