Antwerp 1920. Marathon © Collections L'Équipe 22 August 1920. Starting from the Olympic Stadium, the marathon ran through a city under reconstruction less than two years after the end of the Great War. Antwerp was chosen to host the Games as a tribute to the Belgian people, who had been particularly hard hit by the fighting and destruction. The winner of the race, Finland's Hannes Kolehmainen, who had already won three gold medals in 1912 (5,000m, 10,000m and cross-country), added to his record of achievements. "He is one of the most wonderful athletes we have ever seen", commented the newspaper "Excelsior". Single posterior print. Edition 1/1.
