The rider, Karim Laghouag, 46, was Olympic champion with the French eventing team in 2016. They should not have come to Tokyo but a succession of withdrawals led to the duo having to ensure on this muggy evening the 3rd place of the Blues in the eventing after a failed dressage test but a successful cross country. Triton Fontaine and Karim Laghouag dropped a bar but the French team (with Nicolas Touzaint on Absolut Gold and Christopher Six on Totem de Brecey), won a bronze medal "worth its weight in gold".
