The French did not want to miss their reunion with the Olympic festival, which the country had not organised since 1924. Some 60,000 bundled-up spectators watched 37 nations go through the gates of the Belledonne, Vercors and Oisans massifs. The France of the "Trente Glorieuses" hoped for a triumphant fortnight.
