A career military man, the fifth duke of Rohan was a colonel in 1734, a brigadier general in 1743, a marshal of camp in 1762 and a lieutenant general of the king's armies in 1781. He died in exile in Nice during the Revolution. The mace and chabot of his arms, surmounted by a ducal crown, alternately adorn the four corners of each plate. Two damaged headpieces; in volume I, freckles on the false-title and two wormholes in the upper margin of the volume.
