VAN VEEN (Otto).
Quinti Horatii Flacci Emblemata. Imaginibus in æs incisis, notisque illustrata. Antwerp, Philippe Lisaert, 1612. In-4, speckled calf, spine decorated, spotted edges (17th century Dutch binding). Third edition of this famous book of emblems inspired by the work of Horace.
The illustration consists of a portrait of Horace on the title and 103 full-page emblems, the same as in the original 1607 edition, engraved in intaglio by Cornelis Boel, Cornelis Galle and Peter de Jode after Otto Van Veen (1556-1629), known as Vænius.
This Flemish painter and engraver, who was Rubens' master, is also the author of the text, printed in five languages in this edition: Latin, Spanish, Flemish, Italian and French.
A pleasant copy, despite a trimmed headband and rubbed spines.
