SAINT-JURE (Jean-Baptiste).

The Life of Monsieur de Renty. Septiesme edition. Paris, Pierre Le Petit, 1664. In-12, lemon morocco, triple gilt fillet, coat of arms in the centre, spine decorated with small irons, guilloche edges, inner lace, gilt edges (period binding). New edition of this biography of one of the great figures of the French school of spirituality of the 17th century, written by the Jesuit Jean-Baptiste Saint-Jure (1588-1657). The work, first published in 1651, was reprinted many times until the end of the century. As a layman, Baron Gaston de Renty (1611-1649) devoted himself tirelessly to religion and charity. This "musketeer of the Church", according to Michel de Certeau's expression, became spiritual master of the Carmelites of Dijon and Beaune, took personal care of the poor and established communities of artisans to live like the first Christians. He also worked on the foundation of the city of Montreal by raising funds at court to support the enterprise of Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve and Jeanne Mance, whose spiritual brother he was. Copy in lemon morocco with the arms of the Marquis de Renty. Son of Gaston de Renty, Jean-Jacques, marquis de Renty, baron de Landelles et du Bény, embraced the career of arms and distinguished himself during the Dutch war, at the battle of Ensheim in 1674, served as marshal of camp at the siege of Luxembourg in 1684 and was made lieutenant general of Franche-Comté in 1687, then lieutenant general of the king's armies the following year. He died in 1710. His eldest son, also a career soldier, died without issue in 1756. Missing the portrait-frontispiece. Upper hinge cracked, minor foxing.
