PSEAUMES (Les)

in the form of prayers. Paraphrase. Paris, Daniel Horthemels, 1690. 2 volumes in-12, red morocco, gilt lace framing, boards entirely decorated with an alternating pattern of crowned arms (maces and bezants) in gilt, spine decorated in the same way, decorated edges, red morocco lining framed with a gilt lace, gilt edges on marble (Binding of the time). First edition. This French paraphrase of the Psalms, printed opposite the Latin text of the Vulgate, is attributed to François Pâris alone by the Dictionnaire de spiritualité and to François Pâris and Vincent Loger by Barbier and Hoefer. The work received the approval of theologians close to Port-Royal, including Vincent Loger. François Pâris, a Jansenist himself, was parish priest of Saint-Lambert, then sub-deacon of Saint-Étienne-du-Mont. An adjusted copy, in which the single volume of the edition has been divided into two thin volumes. An exquisite copy of rare elegance in doubled morocco with the boards decorated with a seeded coat of arms of the Rohan-Porhoët. Minimal wear marks on corners and spines, small stain on title, endpapers foxed. Delaveau & Hillard, n°3024.
