The Essays. New edition enriched with annotations in the margin, corrected and increased by a third. Rouen, Jean Durand for Jacques Besongue [sic], 1619. In-8, stiff vellum with overlays, smooth spine, red edges (Binding of the period). Interesting edition of the Essays shared between three booksellers from Rouen: Nicolas Angot, Jean Berthelin and Jacques Besongne. It was based on the Parisian editions of 1608 and 1611, with a brief Advis on the Essays by Marie de Gournay and a Summary speech on the life of Montaigne. The title-frontispiece, engraved in intaglio by Honervogt, is decorated with a bust of Montaigne. Handwritten bookplate of the time in the printer's proof: Johannes Bouston me possidet. Scattered spotting; minor worm work at the bottom of the volume and, affecting some letters, at the head of pp. 831-878; corner of p. 831 torn; last leaf shortened in the margin, with loss of some letters in the index.
