Description

MAROLLES (Michel de).

Tableaux du Temple des Muses, representing the virtues and vices, on the most illustrious fables of Antiquity. Paris, Pierre Mariette, 1655. In-folio, stiff vellum, smooth mute spine (Dutch binding of the time). One of the most beautiful illustrations of the 17th century, consisting of an architectural title-frontispiece, a portrait by Jacques Favereau and 57 (out of 58) sumptuous mythological paintings by Abraham van Diepenbeck and Pierre Brebiette engraved in intaglio by Cornelis Bloemaert, Dirck Matham and other artists. Fine proofs, bound in Holland with 28 ff. of white paper. The plate of Salmacis and Hermaphrodite is the one by Diepenbeck and not the one by Brebiette, considered too free. From the library of Anne-Madeleine Berthault (1881-1906), with her signature on one endpaper. Missing the plate of the Danaïdes. Brunet, III, 1443 - Duportal, 261.
