[HAWKINS (Henry)].

[Partheneia Sacra, or the Mysterious and Delicious Garden of the Sacred Parthenes.] S.l. [Rouen], John Cousturier, 1633. In-8, half tan basane, smooth spine decorated, daffodil edges (Early 19th century binding). First edition of this very rare and famous book of emblems, composed in English by the British Jesuit Henry Hawkins (1577-1646) and published in Rouen. The work was not reprinted until a facsimile published in 1950. The illustration, engraved in intaglio, includes a frontispiece by Piter van Langeren, a full-page view of the Garden and 48 mid-page emblems, the last of which is signed by Jacob van Langeren. Copy incomplete of the printed title, photocopied, and a little short of margins, with the plate of the Garden and some headlines and running titles slightly trimmed. Mottling, spine splits, old repairs to margins of frontispiece and 2 ff., wormhole at foot of last few leaves. Praz, 241 - Landwehr, Romanic, n°371.
