Les Characteres des passions. Amsterdam, Antoine Michel [Louis and Daniel Elzévier], 1658-1663. 5 volumes in 4 small in-12, red morocco, triple fillet gilt, spine decorated, inner lace, gilt edges (Capé). Very careful Elzevirian edition, with a title-frontispiece dated 1658.
The first two volumes were printed in two editions: they belong here to the second, produced in 1662.
Les Caractères des passions is the masterpiece of Marin Cureau de La Chambre (1594-1669), physician to Chancellor Séguier and Louis XIV, philosopher and adviser to the king. The first two volumes were published in Paris in 1640; the next three in 1662.
