RELIURE DU XVIe SIÈCLE.
Empty binding, folio size (324 x 214 mm) in fawn calf over wood, important cold-stamped decoration composed of a large scroll of rosettes and foliage framed with a fleuron with the initials IR at the four intersections, central rectangle decorated with a cold-stamped semé alternating fleurs-de-lis and crowned suns in diamond-shaped compartments with double fillet, spine decorated with cold-stamped fillets (Binding of the 16th century signed by Jan Ryckaert, Ghent). Beautiful specimen of a stamped calf binding by Jan Ryckaert (1506?-1573?), bookbinder and bookseller from Ghent.
The diamond pattern is characteristic of his work: the six bindings by Ryckaert in the British Library have a similar configuration.
From the libraries of Baron Jérôme Pichon, one of the greatest French bibliophiles of the 19th century, and Léon Gruel, a famous bookbinder and collector of antique bindings, with his ex-libris.
Spine and spinebands formerly rebound in imitation, minor restorations to boards, clasps missing.
