Description

QUINTILIEN.

Oratoriarum institutionum libri duodecim. Cologne, Eucharius Cervicornus for Gottfried Hittorp, 1527. In-folio, skin turned over, six-ribbed spine, spotted edges (17th century binding). Sumptuous edition of the Institution of Oratory by Gerhard Bucoldianus. Printed in round letters, it features a beautiful title frame after Hans Holbein the Younger - drawn for the princeps edition of Saint Hilary of Poitiers published by Erasmus at Froben, in Basel, in 1523 - executed by Anton Woensam of Worms, where various ancient figures, such as the tyrant Dionysius and Queen Cleopatra, are represented in an architectural portico. The text is further adorned with two bands (one of which is repeated) and elegant wood-engraved lettering on a black background. From the library of Bernard de Noblet, count of Chenelette, lieutenant of the marshals of France in the bailliage of Mâcon, with 18th century bookplate. Marginal foxing; angular restoration to the title, sparing the engraving; title piece missing.
