Description

PEROTTO (Niccolò).

Cornucopie nuper emendatum a domino Benedicto Brugnolo. Venice, Giovanni Tacuino, 1501. In-folio, soft reused vellum (old binding). Rare post-incunabula edition, revised by Benedetto Brugnoli, of this monumental work by Niccolò Perotto (1430-1480), humanist philologist and archbishop of Siponto. Conceived as a linguistic and historical commentary on Martial's epigrams, the Cornucopiæ is one of the most important Latin dictionaries of the time. The first edition of the work was published in Venice in 1489. Elegant Venetian printing in round letters, on two columns, with the mark of Giovanni Tacuino drawn by Benedetto Montagna on the title. Some handwritten annotations, one crossed out in the margin of the title. Missing in the margin of the title, affecting a few words on the verso, and on the last leaf, removing the printer's mark; lower corners of 10 ff. gnawed; some foxing, stains and small wetnesses. Binding worn with tears and lacks.
