Description

DORAT (Jean) et Jean-Antoine de BAÏF.

In Henrici III Regis Galliæ, et Poloniæ, fœlicem reditum, versus, in fronte Domus, publicæ Lutetiæ urbis ascripti, quo die supplicationes & Ignes sole[m]nes publico conventu celebrati sunt. Paris, Frédéric Morel, 1574. Small in-4 of 4 ff.n.ch. (of 6), green half-basin (modern binding). Very rare first edition of this booklet of Latin verses composed by Jean Dorat to celebrate the return of Henri III to Paris on September 14, 1574. It contains two verses in honour of the Parisian councillors on the verso of the title and three Latin pieces by Dorat: In Henrici III, regis Galliæ et Poloniæ, fœlicem reditum; De regis Henrici III fœlici auspicio; and De S. Crucis festo bis regni Henrico auspicato. These three pieces are followed by their translations in French rhyme by Jean-Antoine de Baïf, known by their incipit, namely: Tel est le Soleil..., De l'heureux auspice du roy Henri III... and Du jour Saincte Croix deux fois bonencontreux pour le roy Henri III... However, our copy being incomplete of the last two leaves, it contains only the first of these translations. Copy of Jean de Vulcob, sieur de Sassy and abbot of Beaupré, ambassador of the king of France in Vienna, to the emperor Maximilian II since 1570, with this unsigned consignment at the top of the title: For Monsieur de Vulcob. From the library of Spencer Compton Cavendish (1833-1908), eighth Duke of Devonshire, with bookplate at Chatsworth Castle. A copy incomplete of leaves B1 and B2 and a little faded. Rothschild, n°2319 - Henri III patron of the arts, sciences and letters, PUPS, 2006, p. 157.
