BRANT (Sebastian).

[Stultifera Navis]. [Basel, Johann Bergmann de Olpe, 1 August 1497 - 1 March 1498]. In-4, paperback, 19th century marbled paper cover, untrimmed, cloth-covered folder and slipcase (Honnelaître). A composite copy of the Nave of Fools, combining leaves from the second and third Latin editions, both published by Johann Bergmann, a few months apart, in August 1497 and March 1498. These two incunabula editions, which are almost identical, are illustrated with the same woodcuts as the original 1494 edition, published in German by the same Basel printer. The Latin translation, by Jacob Locher, originally appeared in March 1497. Superb and curious woodcut illustration, very famous, to which the young Albrecht Dürer contributed, describing the follies of men and their consequences, the experiments of alchemists, adultery, tortures, etc. The complete copies contain 117 woodcuts, of which 2 full-page and 5 repeated. A relic copy, incomplete of 36 ff.: a1, b2-b6, c2, c4, c8, d8, e5, f8, g1, g3, g7, h4, i5, i7, k5, k8, l7, m3, n8, o1, o4, o5, q2, q3, r1, r5, x1, x4, y1-y4, while 7 ff. are present in duplicate; 3 ff. have important gaps: n1, n2 (duplicate) and p3.
