In Le berger à la canne et le joueur oliphant plus coucher ou lever de soleil, two scenes organized in "vignettes" unfold. Two characters are busy with activities related to the alpine transhumance: a shepherd guides his sheep and a man plays the Alpine horn, an instrument used in the mountains to communicate between different villages. Tradition seems to be at the heart of this work, but also the strong symbolism of the shepherd's staff. Once again, Robert Combas thwarts the two-dimensional aspect of his canvas by giving an impression of transparency in the treatment of the flesh of the characters.
