ESCUELA FLAMENCA, h. 1500

Santa Carved wood, polychromed and gilded 84 x 35 x 19 cm The sculptural work that concerns us is of great finesse and delicacy that manages to convey calm to the viewer. The carving shows a combination of late Gothic models with the new humanist spirit. Classical sculpture is not yet the absolute reference point, but the nuanced Flemish naturalism of the end of the 15th century is still maintained. On the other hand, the way of carving the folds of the vestments already speaks of a certain introduction of the Italian: these are softer and softer, more realistic than the Gothic ones, although in some areas they still present the typically Flemish "V" folds. _x000D_ The saint, in a slightly tilted frontal position, has left behind the solemn Flemish hieratism, and has a sweet oval face with white flesh tones. Under her wide forehead, we find small dark eyes with a serene gaze and a mouth with thin lips flanked by blushing cheeks. She wears a red tunic with a circular neckline in gold and is touched by a crown under which there is a large golden veil that falls over her shoulders covering her arms and torso, letting long wavy locks of hair escape. Lacking attributes it is impossible for us to determine which saint she is. _x000D_.
