Description

FERNANDO BOTERO (Medellín, 1932)

Las mujeres de Botero "Las mujeres de Botero" ( Editorial Artika ) is an artist's book that invites us to get to know the work of the painter, draughtsman and sculptor Fernando Botero (Medellín, 1932) through 45 drawings in which women, his favourite subject, are the absolute protagonists. A limited and numbered edition - 2,998 copies, of which 2,798 are in Arabic edition and 200 in Roman edition with the artist's signature - in which the master has been involved in all the details. The work is presented in a sculpture-case: a painting of a woman that has been given volume in order to house the two books that make up this edition: the Art Book, in a bilingual Spanish-English edition, which includes 45 drawings selected by the artist from his personal archive, and the Book of Studies, by Lourdes Cirlot, which allows us to delve deeper into his life and work. _x000D_ Cirlot includes a chapter dedicated to the analysis of the drawings included in this new work, a detailed study of their composition, technique, theme and symbolism. These texts are accompanied by an interview with the artist by the art historian. As for the 45 drawings, they are accompanied by quotations taken from stories published by the artist in the 1980s. These fragments put his universe into words and allow us to delve into the recreation of his inner world. Mario Vargas Llosa has collaborated with an introduction that invites us to enter into the book and enjoy Botero's most intimate work. The drawings show multiple female figures, all of them suggestive, sensual, intense, full of life and deeply expressive, with the unmistakable stamp of the master of the volume. These have been printed in four inks on individual sheets and glued to the book with three dots of glue. Two types of paper have been used for the plates, a watercolor paper for the drawings and watercolors and a handmade paper, specially made for this edition, for the works in which the artist had used amate paper. All the plates have been die-cut according to the original and bear the numbering of the copy on the back. In the colourful tones of yellows, blues or reds of the drawings, the techniques used by the artist can be distinguished, such as watercolour, pencil, sanguine or bistre, pigments that require great mastery.
