"A throw of the dice will never abolish chance," wrote Mallarmé. The dice, as if caught in the instantaneousness of their throw, leave any attempt at explanation in suspense: are they really dice? By what sleight of hand do they seem to hold in the air? What is this dark space into which they are about to fall? The image is an illusion. Since 2009, Olivier Degorce has been playing with materials, colours and lights, in an instinctive and artisanal research that leaves room for wandering and experimentation. The image immobilizes a moment where objects, a background, a light agree within a mise-en-scene which will disappear as soon as the shooting is completed.
