On a white background that places it in a form of non-reality, the apple is covered with a creamy white paint that is still fresh. The apple awakens associations of ideas: the poisoned fruit of Snow White (although immaculate, it is here properly inedible), the forbidden fruit of Adam and Eve (by denaturing the fruit, the artist thus delivers us from the nostalgia of the original Paradise). Olivier Degorce reveals the challenge that, since the 17th century, has been at the heart of still life painting: to abstract the object from reality through a manipulation that delivers it to the world of the image and, in so doing, to open up the plurality of its meanings.
