Description

School of the middle of the XVIIIth century: "Supposed portrait of André DESILLES de CAMBERNON, known as the Hero of Nancy, in officer's uniform of the Regiment Mestre de Camp Général Dragons and wearing the Order of Saint-Louis", oil on canvas (some minor restorations, canvas marouflaged), in a later gilded wooden frame - 80 x 62 cm. André Désilles came from a family of shipowners from Saint-Malo. He was the son of Jeanne-Rose Picot de Clorivière (sister of the Jesuit Pierre-Joseph de Clorivière2 ) and of Marc Désilles de Cambernon, treasurer of the Breton association and owner of the Fosse-Hingant marina in Saint-Coulomb. In August 1790, as an officer in the King's infantry regiment in Nancy, he intervened when a mutiny broke out in the King's infantry regiment, the Mestre de Camp General cavalry regiment and the Swiss regiment of Châteauvieux. André Désilles was shot three times and his heroism moved the whole of France. On September 3, the National Assembly, at the instigation of Mirabeau, thanked him for his conduct and Louis XVI had him awarded the Cross of Saint Louis. He died of his wounds in October. His body was brought back to Saint-Malo and buried on 3 November. On 29 January 1791, the Assembly voted for a service in honour of the "hero of Nancy".
