Description

Trinh Huu Ngoc (1912-1997) School of Fine Arts of Indochina. Class of 1938. Woman and her child. Painting on silk, with title and artist's stamp in the upper right corner. 1937 or 1938. Dimensions painting on silk only : 54x39,5 cm. Dimensions with silk band : 72x53 cm. A few small freckles. Nice period frame, typical of those presented during the annual exhibitions of the Indochina School of Fine Arts. The graphics and composition are typical of the style instituted by Nguyen Nam Son (1890-1973) then director of the School of Fine Arts in 1938. These borrowings can be found in the creations of many students from this generation such as: Nguyen Phan Chanh, Nguyen Anh, Vu Cao Dam... Let us specify that even if Trinh Huu Ngoc did not master the Chinese language and calligraphy, it was often customary when one was a student at the Indochina School of Fine Arts to embellish one's works with an artist's seal accompanied by a calligraphic title. A tradition, set up by Victor Tardieu, in order to attract buyers - often European in the 1930s - who were very keen on these graphic elements specific to the Far East. This work on silk is a work by Trinh Huu Ngoc, when he was a student at the Beaux-Arts. After his graduation in 1938, he definitively abandoned Chinese calligraphy and worked in a more personal way. Provenance: Bought at an annual exhibition of the Beaux-Arts in 1937 or 1938 by a family of French administrators who returned to France in the 1940s.
