IRAQ, ABBASSIDIC ART, 10th CENTURY A small earthenware bowl with flaring sides and a small heel, decorated with metallic lustre. A capridium, with part of an inscription in kufic script at the end of its right horn, stands out in reserve on a speckled background. A frieze of semi-circles on the rim. On the reverse, three discs on an ocellated background. Restored fractures and missing pieces (restorations not visible under the UV lamp); glaze in relatively good condition. This small bowl is part of a very interesting group of metallic lustre-decorated ceramics with animal decoration, several of which belong to the Keir Collection (Ernst J. Grube, Islamic Pottery of the Eighth to the Fifteenth Century in the Keir Collection, Faber and Faber, London, 1976, nos. 25-30, pp. 65-67). The reverse of this bowl has the characteristic ocellated decoration of Abbasid pieces, belonging to type E listed by Ernst Grube (op. cit., p. 50). Expert : L.S.
