EGYPT, COPTIAN ART, 4th-6th CENTURY A.D.
Fragment of tapestry on unbleached linen warp threads, S twist, crossed and grouped by two, eight ribs per cm. Weft of unbleached linen, S twist, 28 threads per cm. Purple wool wefts, S twist, 42 threads per cm. Relay tapestry, curved wefts, single grouped and compensated perfilages. Dyed in a madder root (red) and indigo (blue) bath giving a purple colouring.

Dimensions with stand : 36 x 25,5 cm.
The purple colouring here was made in such a way that it perfectly imitates the real purple colouring made from murex (a very precious marine shell gland unknown in Egypt).
