Description

[Algeria] Clovis Dardentor by Jules Verne. Illustrations by Benett. Paris, Bibliothèque d'Éducation et de Récréation, J. Hetzel Éditeur, sd (1898). Large single in-8°. Publisher's full red percaline boards "with initials, silvered". Magnier et ses fils relieurs. Gilt edges. Blue-grey endpapers. Im- primerie Gauthier-Villars. Six hors-texte plates in colour. Catalogue "O" for 1896-1897. First illustrated edition and second simple hardback. Spine very slightly faded. Some foxing. Otherwise a magnificent copy. Abandoned for about eight years, this binding "with the initials JV-JH" was taken over by Hetzel to satisfy an order from Belgium. However, to avoid any confusion with the past, he opted for the gold and silver mixture that suits him so well. On this occasion, and for the first time, Hetzel bound a number of double volumes into two identical volumes, each distinguished by stars on the spine. Bound in very limited quantities, all the titles are rare and very difficult to find in good condition due to the fragility of the percaline, which is thinner - and often dried out and brittle, as if burnt - than those used for the classical volumes.
