THYMIATHERION CONFIGURED CANOSINO DATE: IV-III sec. a.. C. MATERIAL AND TECHNIQUE: hazelnut figulina clay with white mottling; overpaintings in pink, yellow, sky-blue and white, moulded with retouches in sticks. The body of the vase is elegantly modelled as the head of a young woman, flanked by two groups of leaves and rosettes, with an oval face, large amygdaloid eyes in relief, straight nose, slightly pronounced cheekbones, small fleshy mouth and pointed chin. The voluminous hair is wrapped in a net sakkos and forms thin wavy locks on the forehead with a central parting; the woman wears a pendant necklace and a floral crown of small petals and rosettes painted in white, pink and blue; at the top of the head there is a floral bud with many petals from which rises the circular plate of the thymiatherion on the edge of which there are two crowned female heads with melon hairstyle facing upwards and a dove, all three springs from the calyx of a flower PRODUCTION: Apulian ceramics, Canosa STATE OF CONSERVATION: intact except for some missing petals DIMENSIONS: h. cm 33 ORIGIN: private collection, Bari CFR.
