GRANDE CRATERE A CALICE APULO A FIGURE ROSSEDATAZIONE: 340-320 a.C.MATERIA E TECNICA: argilla figu

LARGE APULIAN GOBLET KRATER WITH RED FIGURES DATE: 340-320 BC. MATERIAL AND TECHNIQUE: pinkish figulina clay, shiny black paint, white and yellow overpainting; modelled by fast lathe. Everted lip with distinct folded rim, cylindrical basin with concave profile, cylindrical stem, moulded echinus foot, stick handles, set horizontally on the maximum expansion and twisted upwards. ADDITIONAL DECORATION: under the lip a vine of olive leaves; under the figural scene a theory of rosettes on one side and a chain of phytomorphic spirals on the other; painted handles and foot except for the external rim. DECORATION: side A) rare representation of Aphrodite (whose name is written in graffito with the other two characters) standing on a chariot and turned to the left with the reins in his left hand and the whip in the right. The goddess is depicted with kekryphalos, stephane radiata, earrings and a long pleated robe stopped at the waist by a belt and with a cloak that flutters for the chariot race. Instead of the two horses there are the two sons of the goddess, Eros and Himeros, depicted in flight, naked, with open wings and wearing shoes, Eros standing in profile while Imeros is seen in three-quarter profile and looking back at his brother. The two sons of Aphrodite indicate the two parts of love, the rational and the irrational and crazy that transcends into lust. Below the chariot in flight a running dog on the left chases a fawn. Side B) scene of conversation between a young man with thick curly hair, standing left, naked, with the cloak wrapped on the left arm, holds with the left hand a phiale and a tyrannus from which hangs a tapeworm embroidered in the other hand; in front of him a young girl standing and turned to the right with kekryphalos, stephane radiata, earrings and a long pleated dress that reaches the ground, leans against a tree and holds a tyrannus in his right hand; in the field rosettes STATE OF CONSERVATION: intact, encrusted PRODUCTION: Apulian pottery with red figures, Berlin-Branca group.
