CRATERE A CAMPANA APULO

APULIAN BELL-SHAPED CRATER DATING: 360-350. b. C. MATERIAL AND TECHNIQUE: chamois figulina clay, shiny black paint, orange colouring; modelled by fast lathe. Distinct everted lip, with rounded rim, bell-shaped body, stick handles, set horizontally and twisted upwards; echino foot. ADDITIONAL DECORATION: under the lip a horizontal trellis of olive leaves; under the two figurative scenes a left-hand meander interrupted by a cross motif. DECORATION: side A) Naked Pan, seated in three quarters on a rock and backwards; the demigod has a thick curly hair and long beard, is characterized by feral ears and long tail and holds in his left hand a long tyrant resting transversally on the chest; the right arm is stretched towards the figure of Hermes, standing behind him and facing left. The god is easily recognizable for the petassum lowered on his shoulders and for the caduceus that he holds in his right hand; from his left shoulder falls the thickly pleated cloak that is held by the left hand below; on the other side of Pan is a young woman facing the demigod with a cornucopia in her right hand and is completely wrapped in a large cloak that reaches the ground. side B) scene of conversation: two young men cloaked in a long embroidered himation from which only one arm and part of the chest comes out, are facing a third male figure completely wrapped in himation with a wide embroidered band that covers his head; STATE OF CONSERVATION: intact, with the exception of a spinning, a recomposed handle and some chipping.
