IMPORTANTE ANFORA CALCIDESE

IMPORTANT CALCIDIAN AMPHORA DATE: 530-510 sec. a.. C. MATERIAL AND TECHNIQUE: pinkish figulina clay, orange mottling, shiny black paint, modelled on a quick lathe. Lip with echinus shape, high cylindrical neck with concave profile, separated from the rounded shoulder by a collar in relief; ovoid body elongated downwards, echinus foot, stick handles, set from the shoulder to the neck. ADDITIONAL DECORATION: varnished mouth, handles and foot; on the neck, on both sides, bearded male profile facing right, between vertical lines in tremolo pattern; on the shoulder, false baccellation, wide band under the figured scene, rays at the connection with the foot. DECORATION: side A) two standing facing roosters in heraldic composition with tails open like a fan; in the field spirals and rosettes; side B) two standing facing lions in heraldic composition and back with open jaws and hanging tongue; on the upper back the felines have their tails folded in an 'S' shape; in the field two rosettes. ORIGIN: Private collection, Turin Chalcidian vases were actually produced by more than one workshop in Rhegion, today's Reggio Calabria, during the 6th century B.C. and were so called by A. Kirchhoff in 1863 because of the prevalence of Chalcidian-derived components, compared to those of Heretrius, in the alphabet of Euboic origin with which the painted inscriptions are written.
