GRANDE ANFORA PANATENAICA APULA A FIGURE ROSSE

LARGE APULIAN PANATHENAIC AMPHORA WITH RED FIGURES DATE: end of IV century BC. C. MATERIAL AND TECHNIQUE: pinkish figulina clay, shiny black paint, white and yellow sub-paintings, modelled by fast lathe. Echino lip, high cylindrical neck with concave profile, distinct from the rounded shoulder; ovoid body elongated downwards, echino foot with moulded edges, ribbed ribbon handles. ADDITIONAL DECORATION: on the lip horizontal olive shoot, on the neck palmette opened like a fan, ionic kyma and radial tongues; on the shoulder volutes and vegetal whorls; under the handles large palmettes opened like a fan between whorls; under the figurative scene false baccellation; stem and bottom of the foot spared. DECORATION: side A) a naked young man, gradient to the right and retrospiciente, with tenia in his hair and a himation draped over his right shoulder and supported by the left hand that also holds a garland, is in the act of bringing a kantharos to his mouth, on the other side a young woman standing and turned to the right, richly clothed with kekryphalos, stephane radiata, armille and shoes wears a pleated chiton and holds a long bandage embroidered in the right and a thyrsus in the left; Between the two figures there is an altar painted and adorned with ribbons on which is placed a monumental amphora with pods; side B) scene of conversation in the gymnasium between two facing ephebes, completely wrapped in himation, draped in large folds from which emerge only the head surrounded by a tenia and the stockinged feet; between the two a writing tablet with a stylus.
