At the age of 18, she became a model and posed for Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Life Magazine. She returned to Paris in 1951 and began painting in 1952. In 1956, she created her first object-reliefs in plaster and various materials. It was in Hauterives that her artistic impetus really took off when she discovered Factor Cheval's 'Palais Idéal'. This unique, inventive, and dreamlike baroque work triggered her creativity. In 1960, she tried her hand at shooting her paintings for the first time. In 1961, Niki de Saint Phalle had her first solo exhibition in Paris and met Jean Tinguely and Les Nouveaux Réalistes. Tinguely encouraged her, saying: 'Niki, the dream is everything, the technique is nothing. Because technique can be learned'. Brussels welcomed her in 1964 for a solo exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts. In 1965, she produced her first Nanas. The most imposing, a giant Nana, lying on her back with her legs spread, a gigantic penetrable Nana, which bears the name Hon (which in Swedish means She) was created in 1966, and commissioned by the director of the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Pontus Hulten. In Garavicchio, Tuscany, Niki de Saint Phalle decided in 1979 to create her 'Tarot Garden', a colossal work made up of 22 elements representing the figures on the main cards of the Tarot deck. She built her house sculptures without a preliminary plan, without an architect. In 1979, Niki made her first polyester chairs. The photo opposite shows Niki de Saint Phalle on her Charly chair, painting a reduced-size version of Le Monde. For Niki, the Clarice and Charley armchairs evoke 'memories of comfort or discomfort, like when, as children, we sat on an adult's lap'. At the same time as Niki was making Charly, she moved to the 'Jardin des Tarots', inside the sphinx-shaped building named l'Impératrice, which would serve as her home and studio for the next seven years. Pontus Hulten writes of Niki de Saint Phalle: 'The great originality of her works is directly due to her personality. The naivety that has been suggested about her implies an extraordinary refinement, not superficial and conventional, but totally singular. His world of signs, shapes, colours and constructions in plaster, wire, polyester and fibreglass, or in pencil strokes, is reminiscent of the bestiaries of Hindu temples, populated by wild animals and all the beauties of improvised nature. Certain themes and subjects recur through the decades: the child being born, the house, monsters and, above all, women, and men'.
