P 238/40 CHARLES CAMOIN (1879-1965) SBD "LES MOISSONS PRESQU'ÎLE DE ST TROPEZ" AQUARELLE GOUACHEE 44X36 ET 62X54 (LEGENDE) - enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux Arts de Marseille, in Gustave MOREAU's studio, he met his fellow students Henri MATISSE, albert MARQUET and Henri MANGUIN . Around 1900, he discovers the impressionists and while doing his military service in Arles he gets in touch with CEZANNE to whom he shows his recent production. The master took a liking to him and offered him advice and encouragement, and maintained a regular, paternal and affectionate correspondence with him, even going so far as to offer him the privilege of accompanying him on the subject. From 1921 onwards, he shared his life between Saint Tropez and Paris, the Provencal peninsula offered him work on the motif, a luminous atmosphere and a range of colours which testified to CAMOIN's attachment to the impressionist aesthetic.
