Flaubert, Madame Bovary. Paris, Blaizot, 1931. In-4. Very fine edition illustrated by Charles Léandre, one of 50 copies on japon with three states of the etchings. Signed "oeuvre d'Auteuil" binding, half-wine morocco with corners, ribbed spine, gilt head, covers and spine preserved. Some light rubbing. A good copy.

FLAUBERT (Gustave). Salammbô. Paris, Michel Lévy frères, 1863. In-8 (2) ff, 474 pp, (1) f. black half-maroquin with corners, spine ribbed, gilt title, gilt head (period binding). Headbands, nerves, spines and corners rubbed. Numerous freckles. First edition, which, according to Baudelaire, sold out in two days. Flaubert began writing this novel shortly after the end of Madame Bovary's trial, and set the action in Carthage three centuries B.C., a far cry from the Normandy of the mid-19th century (Vicaire, III, 724).
