FERNANDO LLANOS (Ca. 1470 / Ca. 1525) "The virgin and Child"

Together with Fernando Yáñez de la Almedina, with whom he is frequently associated, he was a key figure in the introduction of the Leonardo Renaissance in Valencia. The painter is documented as having stayed in Florence as a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci in 1505, working with him on the Battle of Anghiari. On his return from Italy, he painted the doors of the main altarpiece in Valencia Cathedral with Yáñez, putting into practice the innovations known in Italy. Later, in 1516, he was in Murcia, where he painted the panel of The Betrothal of the Virgin (Murcia Cathedral). The present work, which is of a devotional nature as the gilded background emphasises, features an iconography frequently used by Valencian painters of the time and which has its origins in the Flemish world. At least two panels with the same iconography have been attributed by Gómez Ferchina to Llanos in recent years, one in the Félix Palacios Collection in Zaragoza (oil on panel, 54.5 x 40 cm) and the other in a private Valencian collection (see Gómez Ferchina, J., "Los Hernandos", Ars Hispánica, 2011 pp. 119-120), both with stylistic and compositional similarities. Attached is a report by José Gómez Frechina, who made the work known, signed in 2018. . Oil on board.52,5 x 37,5 cm
